Without a doubt, the jewel in the crown of the Voxnan River: a veritable whitewater hell, where the entire flow rushes down a steep slope while the rocky terrain boxes in the river and multiplies its force.
Even if you are not a whitewater enthusiast —this rapid is reserved for experts only—, Hylströmmen is definitely worth a visit. You can get there by car via an unpaved track to a small car park, where you will find a sign with the name of the rapid and the start of the path that leads to the natural viewpoint.
Right at the start of the rapid there is a metal suspension bridge that allows you to observe this spectacle of nature in complete safety. From a packrafter's perspective, it is one of those rapids that is better enjoyed from the shore than from the water: its technical level, powerful holes and numerous potential hazards make it a perfect candidate for portaging for the vast majority of mortals.
For packraft enthusiasts, the Hylströmmen is a reminder to treat the river with absolute respect. It is the kind of rapid that tests the limits of both the equipment and the paddler, inspiring equal parts humility and admiration. From the viewpoint, one can imagine the perfect line... but also understand why, sometimes, the best decision in packrafting is to observe, learn, and continue downstream in search of a more navigable stretch.
Further downstream from Hylströmmen, the Voxnan offers much gentler and more navigable sections, ideal for enjoying packrafting without sacrificing excitement. Amidst spruce forests and moss-covered banks, the river alternates between gentle rapids and crystal-clear pools that invite you to take your time. It's the perfect contrast: after witnessing the fury of the Hylströmmen, gliding through these calm stretches feels like reconciling with the river and letting yourself be carried away by its natural rhythm.
